DAUGHTERS OF MARY IMMACULATE (DMI) AND COLLABORATORS IN AFRICA

St. Joseph University in Tanzania (SJUIT) is a fully accredited higher learning institution, officially registered by the Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU) under Order No. 29 dated 21st December 2011. Its origins trace back to the inspiring vision and relentless dedication of its Founder Chairman and Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Dr. J. E. Arul Raj, who established the Daughters of Mary Immaculate (DMI) and Collaborators in a remote village in India in 1984.

Motivated by Christian biblical values and a deep commitment to serving the marginalized, Rev. Fr. Dr. Arul Raj led the mission in delivering transformative charity and development work in underprivileged and rural areas. The charism of the DMI Society—"Loving God by serving the poor, to become fully human and fully alive"—continues to guide all its activities. Today, DMI directly supports:

  • Over 500,000 women
  • More than 10,000 college students
  • Around 8,000 school children
  • Over 35,000 children under its care and protection

The African Mission:

DMI and its Collaborators arrived in Tanzania in 2003, responding to an invitation from His Eminence Cardinal Polycarp Pengo of the Archdiocese of Dar es Salaam. With the visionary leadership of Rev. Fr. Dr. J. E. Arul Raj, and the committed efforts of Dr. T. X. A. Ananth (Director of International Operations) and Mr. Ignatius A. Herman (Director of Education), the African mission rapidly grew from a humble beginning into a dynamic, impactful organization.

Expanding their mission across East and Central Africa, DMI has established institutions in:

  • Zambia – DMI-St. Eugene University
  • Malawi – DMI-St. John the Baptist University
  • Upcoming missions in Ethiopia and South Sudan
